"The first few pages were delightful. The author is an excellent writer and was humorous and irreverent. That didn't last very long though. She then started explaining everything in Greek, translations and etymology. I enjoyed the translations and etymology for a few pages, but that seemed to be the essence of the book. I tried skipping ahead hoping to learn more about Greece, a country that I love. Sadly, no the translations kept coming and I lost track of the story because of the distracting translations. Perhaps, the language of Greece was supposed to be the focus of the book, but if that was her intention and this was the wrong book for me."

• I loved the book. I want to (among other things) applaud the author’s insistence to always use the (ancient or modern) Greek names of gods and heroes, instead of their latinate versions. And, then, she decides to make an exception with... Hecuba -- the sound of which is, to modern Greeks, like something emanating from deepest Africa. But Norris loves the sound so much that she... makes it no less than twenty times!
  
  There couldn’t have been any other culmination of this book than the “meeting” of the author with Patrick Leigh Fermor. She knocks at the door of his house in Kardamyli
  
  "I had stood outside a closed door and felt frustrated if you can’t open a door, it might as well not exist. But a door that opens, as this one now did, framing Elpida, is an invitation to a whole world that had previously been denied."
  
  Elpida is Leigh Fermor’s housekeeper -- but, kind reader, please note that it is also the Greek word for Hope...

• The reviews here are quite good, and I agree with most. Learning Modern Greek is tough for this old geezer too, and accenting the wrong syllable keeps me humble too. I promised my Squeeze I would take her to Greece if she learned some Greek, so I bought this book for her.
  
  Been watching the PBS series, “The Durell’s of Corfu” based on Gerald’s book, but want to read Lawrence’s books now. (BTW, Corfu is what the Italians called the island, the Greeks call it Kerkira.)
  
  Also, after Norris’ description, I want to see the statue of Athena in Nashville, Tennessee. Maybe before I travel to Athens.
• Whether you love history, linguistics, traveling or Greece, (or all of them!) this book is delightful and engaging! Loved it so much that I bought two more as gifts! Enjoy!
• Very funny; a most enjoyable read and not just for nerds! Had me laughing out loud.
• CULTURAL TRANSVESTITES CUME IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES.
• Writing of such grace and wit.
• Mary Norris established herself as a skillful writer and someone who is good company on the page in her previous book. This one is both more personal and less personal - plenty of personal stories but also a lot about Greek and Greece and learning both. If you're familiar with ancient or modern Greek you'll enjoy listening to someone tell stories about learning them and about how they evolved (though she seems to think that the sole predecessor of the Greek alphabet was the Phoenician alphabet which is not quite so). If you're not, prepare to learn. Norris wears her learning lightly, and takes us along on a variety of adventures including some that are, to use a little-used term but an accurate one, ribald.
  
  Norris also does not wear out her welcome or get too cute. She's fun to listen to, and makes Greece (or at least the version available to travelers) come alive. You don't have to familiar with the Greek language or alphabet to follow along, though it helps.
  
  No great issues here, and no universal wisdom dispensed, thank goodness. Just an enjoyable few hours with a flexible and well-stocked mind who succeeds in drawing us into her interests.

• The photo captions for this book read like a "who's who" (or in this case a "what's what") of fantastic antiques. The photos are beautiful, but I can only imagine how expensive many of the antiques must be!!
  
  There are 5 main chapters, with photos in each chapter that showcase the design concept. I think most chapters had about 2 pagers of full text with photos between the two pages. The captions for each of the photos describes the contents in a good amount of detail. The chapters are
  * Rugs The Foundation
  * Textiles Creating a Mood
  * Furnishings Blending Antique and Modern
  * Collecting Art and Decorative Objects
  * If it Feels Good, It is Good
  
  There are a lot of antiques throughout the book with a heavy influence from the East but nicely blended with the West. In my case, as I already have an established art collection and we are usually tweaking the design of our rooms and not fully replacing them, this book is more of an inspiration for how items from different cultures and period can blend together beautifully. Even if I was starting from scratch, I doubt I could afford many of the antiques represented in this book. Even so, the photos are beautiful, the color combinations are great, and I think there is still plenty to inspire. I enjoyed reading this book from start to finish.
• Good photography. Nice enough. I thought that too many of the rooms had white or cream walls. A bit forgettable afterwards I’m afraid.
• Beautiful volume by Uber-talented designer.

• This book is too short to cover all of the topics and does not go into enough detail It is condensed. I would suggest purchasing The McGraw-HIll Book of English Grammar and Usage, along with this book and workbook, should you need more explanations on some of the topics. The McGraw-Hill Book even provides tests you can use if you are uncertain of the different types of speech. However, I will say that the commonly misspelled words in this book is more comprehensive than any other grammar books I've taken a look at recently. The workbook also provides a lengthy test of commonly misspelled words, which I found very helpful. If you want to get even deeper into the subject and and are interested in word usage and style and editing, don't forget to take a look at Strunk & White's "The Element of Syle" and then move onto June Casagrande (I would suggest "The Best Punctuation Book Period."). Every author has something to add. This is by no means the only grammar book you will ever need, but it will help guide you and provide a helpful start. Oh, and then there's a few more on proofreading and editing books if you want to brush up your skills. I did like this one; however; as I noted earlier, it provides a long list of the most commonly misspelled words, and believe me, they are up-to-date. I just thought that the textbook with explanations is too short if you are planning on reading some of the copyeditors' books at length.
• My greatest complaint about this book is that it tries to do too much. It's supposedly a concise book that one can use to quickly find answers about grammar. I found the sequencing disorderly and confusing, and many of the descriptions used are flat-out wrong (in professional writing and editing, anyway), confusing, or simply irrelevant/unhelpful. The problem is that often the description is useful, but the example given is so incredibly bad that one wonders if they missed something. Nope—it's just a terrible example. For instance, in the section on plural possessives, the author correctly points out that plural possessives are usually formed with an apostrophe but not 's' on the end. Then she gives an example "trick" to help the reader find the plural in this sentence "The girls jackets were left in the coatroom." The "trick" is then to turn the sentence around so that it reads "The jackets of the girls were left in the coatroom." NOW you know that "girls" is plural. Really? All that noise related only tangentially to the actual point—how to punctuate plural possessives, NOT how to find plural nouns (as if finding the word with the "s" on the end is like divining water or casting magic spells). My guess is that readers will be more rather than less confused after reading this section.
  
  Meanwhile, the author adds sections about predicates, gerunds, and similar concepts that most beginning students will find quite difficult to understand because they are more nuanced than simple subject–verb constructions. She's all over the map in terms of who this book is intended for.
  
  I understand the book was published some time ago, but several discussions about layout and style may not be completely wrong, but are definitely ill-advised. For instance, do we really want to teach writers that there is such a thing as a "compare-and-contrast" paper? Talk about redundant. Professional writers and editors do not use "compare and contrast," because they recognize that comparing includes contrasting by definition. And the whole "five-paragraph" essays smacks of the worst of what we teach students and businesspeople. Such an approach to writing is redundant, overwrought, and wordy as hell. Good writing does not need to repeat itself twice to make a point.
  
  And finally, from a personal standpoint, having someone else read and provide feedback to your writing is not always "peer editing." Often it is simply editing. To assume the person reviewing the work is a peer is a stretch; and besides, if you're a beginning writer, do you really want one of your peers to be your reviewer/editor?
  
  Get Bryan Garner's MODERN ENGLISH USAGE or his book on grammar published by University of Chicago Press (not CHICAGO MANUAL OF STYLE but rather the smaller yellow book on grammar). Though longer books, they are way more accessible, are better organized, and provide better and more concise examples that normal people can actually understand.
• I'm by no means an expert grammarist, and will gladly make up words like grammarist all willy-nilly, but after I read The Only Grammar Book You'll Ever Need by Susan Thurman I saw an immediate improvement in my writing. I'm seriously glad I read through it before I decided to publish because I would be wallowing in mortification about my extra-long sentences now.
  
  There might be better grammar books out there and all sorts of free tips and editing software like Grammarly and Ginger (both which I love and use daily), but I highly recommend checking out The Only Grammar Book You'll Ever Need. It's less than 200 pages, has a quick reference guide for all of your grammar needs, links to helpful websites to improve your writing, and - surprise, surprise - it's written well and gets right to the point. 
• I purchased this as a replacement for the same book that I'd worn out. There's a lot in this book, and some of it may not be in the order most people are expecting. Grammar is not necessarily intuitive. I love this book for one huge reason above all else - the commonly misspelled words of grammar, which is a pet peeve of mine. There are words that are easily misspelled and misused and she covers them here thoroughly.
• I have been in college for what seems like forever. This book is a life savor! It gives great tips/advice and has definitely improved my writing. My professor actually joked that I had someone else write my first essay (after this purchase) for me. I use it as a guide for my papers still to this day.
• Great book! I learned so many new things from this book. My punctuation has improved a lot, and so has the quality of my academia papers. I still go back to this book for reference. I recommend it to most of my friends and anyone who is interested in self-improvement.
• I'm really enjoying this book because of its layout. I can use it for my private students who are somewhat younger than those that I am accustomed to teaching. I can skim through the descriptions and functions of the particular verb or noun, and with ease, rephrase the language in a manner that aptly describes their purpose, as well as describing the function of the various tenses in English. This allows me to use my own knowledge of structure, and break it down into language that is easily understood by youngsters 6-11th grade as well as some college students who have been deprived of grammar throughout the primary years of schooling.

  I’ve had migraines since I was 5. Yes, I said 5. At 25 I was diagnosed with endometriosis after being on the pill for 9 years. I had the surgery, it didn’t help. In fact it left me in need of a lot of guidance & therapy because my pain was not gone & mentally I went through a lot with the surgery alone. Not only did it take me more than 2 weeks to recover from the surgery to remove the endometriosis cells but I no longer felt like my normal self. Sex was non existent to me. I didn’t want my partner to even touch me. And I still had my endometriosis the very next period so the doctors first suggestion was the pill, again. And after going on it again after coming off for a year & a half, I went crazy. My body rejected it. I told my gyno & she said there was nothing else she could do. I talked to other gynos & their go to was the pill. I didn’t want the pill. I liked who I was mentally & physically without it. I’ve been searching for answers since & this book gives me so many options as far as helping heal myself. I got this book at 3pm & I’m already on chapter 7!!
  
  Very informative & very useful information. I can even google everything supplement wise that Dr suggests for your symptoms & guess what it’s natural & proven to work in a lot of women! And guess what it’s better for your body than the pill or surgery!
• I am a pediatrician and use to prescribe the pill often for my teenage patients. The more I learn of the information that Dr. Brighten includes in her book, the more I realized how much I was not helping my patients. I purchased this book for a family member who had been on the pill for some time. The information she has in the book is truly invaluable and allows us to see clearly the issues with the pill, and if nothing else how to handle the consequences that can come from it. I LOVE this book and will recommending it to many families. I think it is a must read for anyone considering the pill for many reasons.
• Beyond the pill has a lot of really great information that I believe everyone who menstruates should read. I've also read similar books, like finding your root cause, and what I found distracting in beyond the pill was that almost every other paragraph has a shout out to the author's branded supplements or programs. It just felt like an overwhelming ad that I didn't get with similar books. Nonetheless, the information and recipes still make this book worth the time. I also follow the author on Instagram and she's really fun, down to earth, and informative.
• After the birth of my first child, I really felt at a crossroads about whether or not to go back onto birth control. There wasn't a lot of advice out there about the pros and cons of going back onto the pill vs staying off. The medical professionals I spoke with encouraged me to continue birth control. Even though I was a physician myself, I felt really torn because there wasn't a lot of readily available info about how it depleted vital nutrients, decreased libido, etc!!!! I wish this book had existed back then, but I'm so thankful it exists now. Dr. Brighten has written an empowering and insightful guide for women. I will be recommending it to my patients, wholeheartedly.
• If you are a woman, whether you’ve been on the pill or not, you need this book. This book provides information for women of all ages and stages.
  
  One of the reasons I bought this book is so that my young teenage daughter has a resource to use to navigate her hormonal journey. I’ll help guide her, with the help of this book, when/if issues arise until she is old enough to tackle this on her own. I want her to understand her period and her body. Down the road, I want her to understand her birth control options and what she can do to help support her body no matter what she chooses. Many years ago, I didn’t know that birth control pills could be so problematic and or what to do when my hormones are out of balance. This book will help my daughter be more informed than I ever was.
  
  Beyond the Pill has quizzes to help you figure out where you might need help and things you can do now to help. It talks about your period and how to understand what is going on each month (which will be useful to young girls and the older crowd who need a refresher course). It talks about ALL the hormones and what you can do to support your body.
  
  This book is going to help women learn about their bodies and speak more intelligently to their doctors when professional help is needed.
• Received my book in the mail and spent the past 3 hours flipping through it and reading! I have to say, this is such an incredible resource. I bought the book even though my birth control history is behind me (10 years and counting) because I wanted to better understand my hormones and how I could support more balance in my 30s. The information that I've read so far has provided me better, clearer explanations than any of my OB/GYNs. I like having more "natural" options at my fingertips and also knowing what to ask. I love how the book is broken into sections, shares all these recommendations, and offers a totally different, fresh perspective on what I can do to be proactive about my hormones. Beyond The Pill is a keeper -- so glad I bought it!!!

So much so that I have worked 11 with a nutrition coach for 2.5 years, I exercise 5-6 days a week. 3 months ago something felt off.
