"A thrilling, coming-of-age journey that will make you yearn to go on your own adventures.” - RUNNER'S WORLD

Anna was never anything like those ‘real’ runners on telly – all spindly limbs, tiny shorts and split times – but when she read about New Zealand’s 3,000-kilometre-long Te Araroa Trail, she began to wonder… perhaps being a ‘real’ runner was overrated. Maybe she could just run it anyway?

Travelling alone through New Zealand’s backcountry for 148 days, she scrambled through forests, along ridge-lines, over mountain passes, along beaches and across swollen rivers. Running up to 52 kilometres in a day, she slept wild most nights, and was taken into the homes and hearts of the kiwi people in between.

The Pants of Perspective is a witty, colourful and at times painfully raw account of a journey to the edge of what a woman believes herself to be capable of. It is a coming-of-age story which will lead you on a roller coaster ride through fear, vulnerability, courage and failure.

For anyone who has ever dreamt of taking on a great challenge, but felt too afraid to begin – this story is for you.

"This is everything I look for in a book about a Running adventure. The author is so brave to set on an incredible adventure and equally as brave to be refreshingly honest and vulnerable, compassionate and kind to people around her, but to herself as well. It’s a joy to travel with Anna - most of the time you can feel like you are right there on the beautiful exotic trail with her. Anna trusts the reader to see the full spectrum of her emotions, it makes the book very relatable and inspiring. I absolutely love Anna’s perspective on the world, people, and happiness. She is trusting, chosing to give people a chance, and to give a chance to herself. Anna is very honest and open without being melodramatic. The part that resonated with me especially is where she reminds herself and us that there’s a feeling of accomplishment, content that money cannot ever buy, and those able to feel that way live more fully and happily and are capable of bringing joy to others. Thank you, Anna!"

  • For adventurers and armchair travelers alike, this wonderful account of an unsupported run up the entire length of New Zealand, with just a backpack, will inspire and entertain. Anna dwells as much on meeting the psychological challenges of her journey as she does on meeting the physical challenges. The lessons she learns about herself and the ways she finds to meet her challenges are combined with evocative descriptions of landscapes and of the kindness of strangers, who invariably become friends within minutes. Immerse yourself in her book, follow her journey, and end up a little happier and a little better equipped to face the hurdles in your own life.

  • This book is real, I loved all of the emotion. Everyone of us can do this but only the special few do it. Although, this inspires me to look at life as a journey full of choices and how I approach it is up to me.
  • Loved this book. What an adventurer and inspiration! Loved living vicariously because I certainly wouldn’t tackle that task. I was surprised how unprepared she was for a lot of it, but had enough experience in figuring things out to come out okay. It was a page turner for me.
  • Wow, wow, wow what an inspirational book! I laughed, groaned, welled up, laughed some more and felt my muscles ache with Anna! It felt like I was with her exploring the wilds of NZ. If you enjoy running or even just need to read about the courage and endurance of a one woman mighty machine, do yourself a favour, buy the book and curl up with a hot beverage of choice and immerse yourself in the pages of this wonderful adventure.
Thank you for this fabulous read Anna!
  • Having read many travelogues from PCT, AT etc, I was looking for something similar, but different. What a treat! Anna is gutsy, funny, honest, and on top of it all - a great storyteller. I really enjoyed going along for the run and can't wait to pick up her other book as well. Definitely recommend for anyone into reading about travel, adventure, ultrarunning or even just New Zealand!
  • Once again Anna McNuff has written a gorgeous story. One filled with life, joy, pain, vulnerability and inspiration. I cried and cheered right along with her. An adventure tale is well told when I’m in the experience as well. Thank you Anna!
  • I liked the authors ability to tell her story in a light hearted yet honest manner. Very well written with an easy to follow timeline. I would recommend this book to anyone who has any sort of athletic ambition.
